Before turning his back on the revolution he helped create, and breaking bread with his institutional brethren, Bernie would have been better served had he heeded the following:
“It must be considered that there is nothing more difficult to carry out nor more doubtful of success nor more dangerous to handle than to initiate a new order of things; for the reformer has enemies in all those who profit by the old order, and only lukewarm defenders in all those who would profit by the new order; this luke-warmness arising partly from the incredulity of mankind who does not truly believe in anything new until they actually experience of it.” -
Nicolo Machiavelli (1469-1527)
Bernie, you damn near did the impossible. You showed us the Promised Land – just beyond the horizon. Thank you. Seriously, thank you. But you made the same mortal mistake all REFORMERS make. You believed you could start a revolution and right a corrupt system from WITHIN the castle.
You’ll go down in history as a good, honest, and honorable man – who’s TEMERITY – to break away from the system made you in a sad, cruel and culpable way, an acolyte in perpetuating it. Your legacy will not be that of a revolutionary or movement builder, but as a Democratic Party shepherd herding the frazzled, scattered flock.
As it turns out, you underestimated us. We overestimated you.
Now, with the flock gathered and faced with a path to follow, the flock has a decision to make. Does it follow the Shepherd back to the master’s home, or do they brush aside the Shepherd’s staff and venture out on their own – to GREENER (party) pastures?
As for me, I’m a black sheep.
Thanks for the ride, Bernie. I can take it from here
